Tips on becoming a top Circus Act

  1. When you tell friends and family you want to join the circus they may not take you seriously. This means you have to prove to them that you are serious by dedicating yourself to it.
  2. The first thing I would advice anybody wanting to join the circus to do is go to attend a live circus show.
  3. The next thing to do is to speak to people who work at the circus and get their opinions and advice.
  4. When a touring circus company come to your local town go along and offer your services as a volunteer. Being around the business whilst doing the jobs no one else wants to do will give you a real insight and will help you to decide if this is something you really want to do.
  5. To work in a circus you need a circus skill whether that be clowning or the trapeze, something you enjoy doing and you feel comfortable doing.
  6. Some circus skills are more accessible than others. Skills like riding a unicycle and juggling are very accessible but not everyone has access to a high wire with all the correct safety equipment.
  7. Check to see if there is a local circus skills club to you. Many universities have circus skills clubs. If there isn’t already one in your town or university start one up.
  8. Performing in a circus is all about entertaining a live audience so get as much practice in performing as possible even if it isn’t circus skills that you are performing.
  9. If there is a skill you really want to try but don’t know how to start get in contact with a circus group and ask how to get started.
  10. Many circus groups are tight nit family based groups so can be hard to break in to. This is why you have to practice your skills until you are the best you can be at them as if you are extremely talented the circus will take you on.
  11. Due to the way circuses are run you won’t see many adverts for circus talent. This is why you need to take yourself to as many circus groups as possible and keep on bugging them until they let you show them your skills. Being in the circus is all about getting noticed and based on your ability you will be offered work.
  12. The one thing to remember that working in a circus requires a great time commitment including living away from home for long periods as you move from one town to another so if you are serious about joining the circus you may have to put the rest of your life on hold.
